High pressure is the first cause of sudden death. Critical four minutes of saving patients suffering sudden death

Believe or not, the statistics indicate that patients with sudden death began to increase in recent years, and among them 30% are young and middle-aged persons aging from 35 to 59 years old. Why do these persons die suddenly? Apart from these persons, are there some persons apt to suffer from sudden death? What on earth does some symptoms happen before the occurrence of sudden death? If you happen to catch a person suffering from this disease, could you give him or her help correctly?

Nearly eight or nine cases of sudden death happening every day

On July 19, 2013, when a man of nearly forty years old was doing morning excise in Qing Dao, he suddenly fell to the ground and became unconscious. Fifteen minutes later he was took to hospital by an ambulance and diagnosed as sudden death by examination.

According to the statistics of emergency center in Qing Dao, a total of 56337 patients received first aid in the first half of this year. Among these patients, a total of 1697 patients suffered from sudden death. Thus nearly nine cases of sudden death happened every day according to these data. Furthermore, the statistics issued by the emergency center showed a total of 1148 patients suffered from sudden death in the first seven month of last year. The number of patients with sudden death in this year was more than that in last year. On July 21, the journalists learned that an amount of 1374 cases with sudden death received first aid in the emergency center in the first half of this year, and 141 cases since July.

High incidence of sudden death in this season

The director of emergency department in Qilu Hospital of Shandong University Lv Ruijuan reminded that 70%~80% of patients with sudden death always had a weak heart with several diseases including coronary disease, myocardial infarction and arrhythmia. In addition, pulmonary embolism, asthma and allergy could lead to sudden death.

“If drivers, people always surfing on the internet and people always on business trip got pulmonary embolism, they easily became prone to sudden death “said by Jiang Xianyan, director of heart center in Fu Wai Angiocardiopathy Hospital of Qing Dao,” because these people always seated for a long time, which could easily lead to venous thrombosis of inferior limb, then cause pulmonary embolism and finally gave rise to sudden death”.

Additionally, sudden death began to spread in the young and middle-aged group. The director of emergency center in Qing Dao, Xu Mei said “the incidence of sudden death in the 35~59 demographic increased year by year, and these patients in the 35~59 demographic occupied one third of all the patients with sudden death.

The journalists learned that sudden death easily occurred in the summer, autumn, winter, sudden cold and seasonal changes. Thus people with a weak heart should be careful in these seasons.

High pressure is the first cause of sudden death

“Higher mental pressure was the first external cause of occurrence of sudden death “said by Song Yongxin, vice director of emergency center in Qing Dao Haici Hospital, “tiredness, staying up all night and high pressure made the sympathetic nerve fibers of people be at high pressure, which could easily lead to coronary artery spasm, and arrhythmia, thereby caused sudden death.”

Unhealthy habits could also store up problems for sudden death. Song Yongxin said “some citizens had an unhealthy diet in which contained a high content of fat, protein and cholesterol. In addition to this, they rarely did exercise, always smoked and drunk alcohol. Thus, they were prone to sudden death.

Be careful of occurrence of these symptoms

Did sudden death really have no obvious sign? Of course not! According to experts, nearly 80% of cardiac patients would appear symptoms before occurrence of sudden death, such as chest tightness, palpitations, dysphagia, sudden fatigue and sudden dizziness. If you appeared these symptoms, be careful! Song Yongxin also remained that a physical examination was necessary if these symptoms happened after excise.

In addition, for citizens always drinking alcohol, if they felt congestion in chest and throat after drunk, they had better go to hospital for an examination.

Citizens with coronary disease should carry a first aid box at all times and prepare an oxygen bag at home. As soon as the disease happened, patients should immediately intake oxygen or keep a sip of nitroglycerine. Apart from this, the patients' relatives could also immediately lift the patients' lower jaw and leaned his or her head back for opening patients' respiratory tract and maintaining smooth breath, then gave the patients artificial breathing and chest compressions.

Make full use of critical four minutes and save the patients' lives

According to statistical data, if patients with sudden death could be given cardio-pulmonary resuscitation during the critical four minutes after disease happened, the success ratio of rescue would be up to 50%. However, the first-aid was taken after cardiac had arrested for ten minutes, the success ratio of rescue would only be 10%.

The cardio-pulmonary resuscitation involved in fifteen external chest compressions and two mouth-to-mouth breaths alternatively. Before performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, we should lay the patient on a rigid plane in order to make the patient's head lower that his or her chest, two legs lay flat or elevated. Then we undid patient's coat, knelt on the right side of the patient and performed the cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

The external chest compression should be performed as the followings: first, the lower edge of the ribs is defined by using right middle finger and forefinger. Second, the right hand is placed on the 1/3 lower the chest and left hand on the top of the sternum. Moreover, the left thumb finger is near the right hand so as that the bottom of left palm was right on the xiphoid. The right hand was placed on the left hand so as that fingers are interlaced with each other. When pressing, the pressing power should be passed from finger root to chest, but the finger should be upward away from chest. The first aider's arms are over the patients' sternum, unbending two elbows and performing vertical compression using power of the upper body. The pressing depth is 3~4 cm for adults of middle weight. After reaching the certain pressing depth, rapidly relax and release pressure to reset chest. Such rhythmical actions are performed repeatedly. Thus pressing time is near equal with relaxing time. The final frequency is 80~100 time/minutes.
