The Scripps Translational Science Institute recently conducted a study in which Holter was compared with ZIO patch who was ambulatory adhesive patch monitor developed by iRhythm Technologies, Inc. During this study, a total of 146 outpatients wore ZIO patch and Holter at the same time in Scripps Green Hospital. The results showed that ZIO patch

ZIO patch detected 96 arrhythmia events compared with 61 arrhythmia events by the Holter monitor

From the results, we found that ZIO patch was more accurate than Holter in detecting arrhythmia events. Since Holter was invented by Norman Holter in 1949, this study was the first large experimental verification on alternative technologies of Holter.

“This study indicated ZIO patch could replace Holter invented by Norman Holter in 1949”said by Eric Topol, a cardiac specialist and director of Scripps Translational Science Institute.

Eric Topol made a statement in which the monitoring process showed that ZIO patch had higher sensitivity than Holter in the past two weeks. Holter generally consisted of a recorder which was the same as the size of phone and worn at waist level and 5~7 leads attached to chest. Furthermore, Holter could only be worn for 24 hours.

The physicians in Scripps Translational Science Institute drew a final conclusion by analyzing the data of ZIO patch and Holter that ZIO patch had the accuracy of 90%, but Holter had the accuracy of 64%. Meanwhile, over a simultaneous monitoring period, the Holter monitor detected 11 arrhythmia events that were undetected by ZIO patch monitor in the first 24 hours. However, the 11 arrhythmia events were subsequently detected by the ZIO patch monitor beyond 24 hours. The ZIO patch monitor also detected 2 arrhythmia events that were undetected by the Holter monitor in the simultaneous 24-hour period.
